Heart attacks are caused by 2 main factors. The first factor is when the blood vessels that supply the heart with blood become blocked, this is known as Ischemic Heart Disease. The second type, Myocardial Infarction is when a severe blockage of a blood vessel that feeds the heart becomes blocked and causes damage to the heart itself.
Chest Pain or Discomfort
The primary symptom of a heart attack is chest pain. This pain can be mild or severe. It will usually feel like pressure in the heart area which will cause the pain. Other symptoms that are common are upper body discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath may often occur with or before chest discomfort. Nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness or fainting, or breaking out in a cold sweat are also common symphtoms.
Move Quickly to Get Help
The most important thing to remember when you think you or someone you know may be having a heart attack is to act quickly. Call 911 and immediately request an ambulance. The faster you get help the less potential for damage to the heart or death.
